(Original Caption) George Stampar, the Executive Assistant to the Warden of Stateville Penitentiary talks to Richard Speck in his cell on death row shortly after the Supreme Court decision that the death penalty is "cruel and unusual punishment; forbidden by the Constitution. Speck, the convicted killer of eight nurses, and other death row inmates learned of the news as they watched the television sets which line the wall at right. There are 30 convicts in Stateville's "death row."
